Oil and Water Don't Mix Rally

WHEN: October 9th at 6:00 p.m. at InsideOut Gallery in Traverse City

In July nearly 500 people from all over Michigan gathered at the Mackinac Bridge to raise awareness about the dangers posed by an oil pipeline that runs through the Mackinac Straits. It was a great event organized by Michigan Environmental Council, TC350, the Michigan Land Use Institute, NMEAC, FLOW, National Wildlife Federation, and dozens of other groups around the state.

Now we’re bringing the rally home to Traverse City!

Join us on Wednesday, October 9th at 6:00 p.m. at InsideOut Gallery for a short and powerful version of the rally.

The event will feature Beth Wallace of the National Wildlife Federation and author of the report 'Sunken Hazard' that first brought attention to the Mackinac pipeline. We will also view video from the July rally and see new underwater footage of the actual pipelines. And we will take action to protect the Great Lakes and talk about how we are taking this to Lansing.

At 7:00 p.m. the event will end, and there will be free music from the True Falsettos. It is sure to be an informative event and a good time.

Why this is so important:

Enbridge Energy has been pumping oil under the Straits of Mackinac for 60 years. Now they want to increase the pressure to pump even more— possibly including the most toxic and corrosive tar sands oil from Canada.

One million gallons of tar sands oil gushed into the Kalamazoo River when an Enbridge pipeline ruptured: one of more than 800 Enbridge spills since 1999. We can’t let a similar disaster happen in our Great Lakes.

Speakers and videos will inform us about the environmental risk of the Enbridge pipeline, the climate impacts of burning this dirty fuel, and what we can do about it.
