A Busy Summer

Last summer the Institute hosted five public events that brought more than 200 people to our office in Benzonia's old schoolhouse.
Our first annual Open House was a great success -- visitors expressed enthusiastic interest in the Institute's many projects, shared their insights and opinions, and carried home bundles of good things to read.
We are grateful to the following local merchants, whose donations of food and beverages helped contribute to the festivities at our Open House:The Cherry Hut, Watervale Inn, L'Chayim Delicatessen, Northern Delights Cafe, Crystal Mountain Resort, andThe Market Basket. Also, our thanks go to Althea Petritz for her spectacular
flower arrangements, to Gwen Frostic for her printed napkins, and to the Benzonia Congregational Church, for the use of their plates, glasses, and coffee maker.

The Institute also sponsored four Dessert & Dialogue events, with presentations and discussion followed by cake, coffee, lemonade, and more conversation.
The programs featured the following topics: Oil and Gas Drilling: Developing Our Underground Resources Without Damaging Our Landscape; Challenges of Transportation: Does More People Have to Mean More Roads?; Sprawl Is Not Inevitable: Strategies for Managing Growth and Preserving Community Character; and the one that produced the largest turnout, Property Rights: Reaching a Balance of Private Property Rights and Community Well Being.
We now are putting together our schedule for Summer 1997. If you have any ideas or suggestions for programs or events, please call Amy Kinney at 616-

The Institute and the Friends of the Jordan River Watershed are mobilizing citizens and informing the public about proposed Antrim gas drilling in the Jordan Valley. We also have hired legal counsel. This is a major battle with much at stake.
Opening the Jordan Valley to oil and gas development would be a blunder of historic proportions. It is crucially important that citizens challenge the procedures by which the Department of Environmental Quality and the Governor's Office are making decisions about the fate of this valuable public legacy.
